Inspired by the 16th century intellectual John Dee, Peter Ulrich creates a CD that consists of 10 very varied songs, that actually also form a unity like in a mysterious library.

The search of Ulrich for ultimate cosmic secrets takes us along ancient religions like Zoroastrianisme, Buddhism and Christianity, but also old wisdoms from the Apache and Navajo don’t leave him unstirred. Also the more occult themes surface on this record when you listen for example to “The Witchbottle of Suffolk”, an almost Gothic song that tells about the power of the so-named ‘witchbottles.’ Not only the contents of the songs is of a varied character, but also the styles and influences seem to come from everywhere.
Ulrich uses a lot of exotic instruments (yang ch’in, ocarina, all types of flutes, cymbals and oboe), funded by his very typical percussion and beats, which we all know from his performances with Dead Can Dance.
Also his very recognizable voice is present again on this album (it still reminds me a bit of Alan Parsons). Solitary but also supported by different layers of voices and synthesizer, he tells about the mysteries from the past, which, we can not deny, still haven’t lost their power and are still applicable to events from our own time. Like the Indians on “Kakatak Tamai” saw how their land flooded, that’s how we saw the destructional power of the Tsunami and are we being confronted every day by environmental disasters and human suffering. His song ‘Another Day’ warns us for our somehow reckless existence, but nevertheless in between every line there lurks a bit of hope for all of us: “The good survived.”
This album is actually far from dark. The whipped up rhythms and beautiful melodies take me far from here. To green valleys, thick forests, high mountains; I see Pagan rituals and camp-fires. I wish I could stay here.
